Alan Savage murdered Geoffrey Small on 6 September 1976 and was convicted of his murder on 28 February 2003.
He was approached by a man whose mother was having an affair with Geoffrey Small to kill him which he was reluctant to do at first but later agreed. He was to be paid £2k and the man gave him a gun and ammunition and told him where the shop was that he worked in. Alan Savage laid in wait and shot Geoffrey Small 4 times and then stole his wallet and holdall.
He was only paid £700 out of the £2k.
Police reopened the case 26 later in 2002 and when Alan Savage was arrested he made a full confession including detailing the man who paid for the killing, however in court he refused to testify against the man and he was never convicted.
